History

It is difficult to pinpoint when the Virtual Assistant Industry began but it is acknowledged that many individuals have contributed over the years.  In the 1980’s there were several home-based secretarial services in operation around the world.  The first online networks began sometime in the 1990’s, along with changes in technology and business.

Although no-one knows the entire history of Virtual Assistants we do know there were two secretary networks in the mid 1980’s.  One by Robyn Green located in Melbourne, Australia and the second in Los Angeles, CA led by Linda Anderson.  VA networks slowly began showing up in 1996 with several more by the year 2000.

The term ‘Virtual Assistant’ wasn’t widely used until the mid 1990’s when networks first began appearing on the internet.  Prior to the term being widely used and recognized VA’s were known as home based businesses, secretarial services or freelance workers.

With the name change also came a change in business attitude.  Unlike freelance workers and secretarial services, that often provide one time project work on a part time basis, Virtual Assistants develop business relationships with their clients providing ongoing support from remote locations.

Business professionals and individuals all over the world rely on VA’s as their right hand to provide services and solutions to meet their business needs.
